Los Blancos came into the game after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Lille in the Champions League in midweek and, although not at their best, managed to take all three points against a plucky Villarreal team.
It took just 14 minutes for the home side to take the lead, and they did so in spectacular fashion.
Luka Modric folded a short corner back to Federico Valverde, who took the deflection and fired a brilliant shot from distance past Diego Conde and into the Villarreal goal.
Many would have expected Real to go on with confidence from there, but that was not to be as Carlo Ancelotti’s men struggled to create chances.
Jude Bellingham tried his luck late in the second half with a shot that went wide, but Kylian Mbappe couldn’t get a shot off after appearing to be played in behind the Villarreal defence.
As a result, the Whites went into the half-time break with a one-goal lead, but there was a scary moment early in the first half when Thierno Barry came on and was brought down in the penalty area, but the play was ruled out as offside, to the relief of the home team and their fans.
