It took just 14 minutes for the home side to take the lead, and they did so in spectacular fashion.
Luka Modric folded a short corner back to Federico Valverde, who took the deflection and fired a brilliant shot from distance past Diego Conde and into the Villarreal goal.
Many would have expected Real to go on with confidence from there, but that was not to be as Carlo Ancelotti’s men struggled to create chances.
