Ghana is considering hosting its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan in neighboring Togo, following the CAF’s ruling that the nation’s main sports stadiums are unsuitable for hosting international competitions.
In accordance with a mandate from CAF, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and other important locations like Accra Sports Stadium and Cape Coast Stadium have been closed for maintenance.
Togo’s national stadium, which satisfies CAF’s specifications, is being seriously considered by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) with just one month to go before the match and no stadium now available.
There are also talks about Ivory Coast, a nation with close relations to Ghana, potentially hosting the tournament after supporting the Black Stars at the 2024 AFCON earlier this year.
Although Ghana anticipates finding a solution to the stadium problems quickly, playing the vital home game outside of the nation is still a real possibility.
The fact that Ghana has only one point from their first two qualification games makes the next game against Sudan more important. They were in a difficult situation after losing to Angola in Kumasi and failing to defeat Niger.
In order to move up from third place and into the qualification spot, Black Stars must defeat Sudan twice in a row.
