GFA President Kurt Okraku lashes out at Black Stars players ahead of important AFCON matches

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku did not hold back as he delivered a harsh talk to the Black Stars players.

Before their vital doubleheader against Sudan this month, Okraku blasted the team and expressed his unhappiness over their previous lackluster results, which have left Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations hanging by a thread.

Ghana started their campaign with a depressing 1-1 draw at Niger and a disappointing loss at home to Angola. This left them with just one point out of a potential six.

“The minimum I expect, the minimum Ghana expects, is a team of boys or men who will indicate passion as well as desire to play for our country,” Okraku said, clearly frustrated with what he perceived to be a lack of passion on the pitch. “Not when you are dribbled and you may be observed strolling on the pitch and the ball is going towards your net. That is impossible, I told the coach.” The team, currently sitting third in Group F, needs to improve if they hope to qualify for the tournament in Morocco the following year.

He urged the players that they should feel proud to wear the national jersey and that they should play with aggression and a desire to win.

“It’s either you guys choose to die for Ghana…or decide to not, then you’ll never get selected,” he said.

On October 10, Black Stars will play Sudan at Accra Sports Stadium. On October 15, they will go to Libya for the rematch.
