The announcement this morning of a near-tragic incident involving certain Black Stars technical team members rocked the Ghanaian football community.
After a game, head coach Otto Addo, assistant coach John Paintsil, and goalkeepers trainer Fatawu Dauda were returning to Accra when a mechanical issue occurred in their car.
The coaches traveled to Tarkwa to observe FC Samartex 1996 vs. Nsoatreman FC in the Champion of Champions final at TnA Stadium.
The back wheels of the team’s Land Cruiser, which has the license plate GR 6521-21, apparently came off while it was traveling on the Tarkwa-Takoradi route.
The driver’s rapid reflexes saved the day, according to witnesses, as this could have turned into a disastrous situation.
Driving in the opposite lane, the driver had to swerve to avoid a head-on accident with a swerving pickup truck.
Fortunately, none of the Land Cruiser’s occupants suffered severe injuries.
But before traveling on to Accra, they were brought to a hospital in Takoradi for additional examinations as a precaution.
The Black Stars are in a critical situation as their training camp for tomorrow’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Angola in Accra is scheduled to start.
Regarding the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has not yet issued an official statement.
But while they get ready for the impending qualifiers, the priority still lies in making sure the coaching staff is safe and well.
