After a fruitful discussion with FIFA, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has revealed plans to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the Ghana Premier League.
The adoption of VAR is a part of the association’s attempts to improve refereeing and the overall caliber of the league, according to GFA President Kurt Okraku, who made the announcement during the 30th Ordinary Congress on Tuesday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
“The Ghana Football Association, particularly in the Ghana Premier League, has taken action to implement VAR. We are excited for this to soon become a reality. Our meeting with FIFA regarding this proposal has gone well,” Okraku stated.
It is anticipated that the implementation of VAR will reduce errors made by match officials and improve the accuracy of the league’s officiating decisions.
At the Baba Yara Stadium during Ghana’s 2022 World Cup playoff matchup with Nigeria, VAR was used for the first time. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since pledged to introduce the technology into the local league.
This is viewed as a major advancement for Ghanaian football, and supporters may anticipate more precise and equitable officiating in the near future in the Ghana Premier League.
