On Thursday night, during Cercle Brugge’s Europa League Qualification Round 3 second leg against Molde FK, Ghanaian midfielder Abu Francis was sent off.
Cercle Brugge put up a great fight, losing 1-0 (3-1 on aggregate) at the Jan Breydelstadion after being down to 10 men early in the match.
Thirty minutes into the game, Francis—who began the encounter alongside fellow Ghanaian Lawrence Agyekum—was issued a red card following a VAR review.
Cercle Brugge, however, did not let this setback stop him from moving on. Abdoul Ouattara scored just before halftime as their efforts were rewarded with a rebound from a corner kick.
With a dominant 3-0 lead from the first leg, Molde had several opportunities to increase their lead, but goalkeeper Delanghe of Cercle Brugge consistently denied them.
Cercle Brugge was eliminated from the competition because, although winning 1-0 on the night, they were unable to overcome the deficit from the first leg.
As they get ready for their next league matchup against OH Leuven on August 18, Cercle Brugge will now focus on internal affairs.
