The Red Devils paid Bayern Munich £38.5 million ($49.5 million) additional £4.3 million ($5.5 million) in add-ons to win the center-back’s signature, and on Tuesday they made the formal announcement of the Dutch defender’s arrival. The 25-year-old De Ligt has already amassed an excellent résumé by playing for elite European teams like Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich, but several analysts have expressed doubts about his skills.
One such expert is former Liverpool manager Souness, who called the Dutchman a “lightweight” defender and doubted if he could help United with their defensive problems. Once Raphael Varane departed Old Trafford at the end of the 2023–24 season, the team was in dire need of a center-back with elite level experience.
