A last-minute obstacle has emerged for the Asante Kotoko SC and Medeama SC partnership to play DC United in the 2024 Capital City Africa Cup.
Because of Kotoko’s visa issues, the two initially decided to field a combined team for the ceremonial match.
The purpose of Medeama’s players, who were granted legitimate US visas due to their involvement in the Capital City Africa Cup the previous year, was to assist Kotoko.
Fans of Kotoko, however, fiercely opposed the plan, voicing their displeasure at having to share a squad with a rival team.
As a result, Medeama ultimately withdrew from the match, forcing Kotoko to come up with a plan on their own for the encounter with DC United.
This dispute underscores the tremendous club loyalties in Ghanaian football, where the concept of rivals teaming up – even for an international cause – can generate strong emotions among supporters.
Kotoko is still determined to compete in the competition in spite of these disagreements.
This is a major event for both Kotoko and Ghanaian football in general because the Capital City Africa Cup is a part of Ghana Week DC 2024, which strives to showcase Ghanaian culture, music, and sports to a global audience.
On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the Kotoko team will leave Ghana for the United States in preparation for the three-day match at Audi Field in Washington, DC.
